In the design process of these objects, Willem explored the limitless shapes of African vases and how each tribe has its own visual language; created through a self-devised construction technique. After brainstorming with Mek, he then started experimenting with new variations of his own technique; landing on an architectural approach to building with ceramics: horizontally rather than vertically. Splitting the vase allowed him the freedom to let two shapes stand alongside each other — subsequently reshaping them into a whole. This new visual language resulted in a range of 5 vases, made exclusively for Mek. Their function and looks are carefully intertwined: the weight of the water at the bottom of the vase serves as a contra-weight tot the shape’s heavy center — striking the perfect balance.

Sculptor Willem van Hooff (1992) graduated from the Design Academy in Eindhoven, The Netherlands — the city where he still lives and works. Like a modern-day version of ancient craftsmen, he digs deep into forgotten techniques and materials and reinterprets them for the future. His philosophy is that each object must have a mind, body and soul; a mind to function, a body for good looks and a soul for character.

These vases are crafted from classic pottery. Once shaped up to its intended shape, it requires two weeks to dry in a special dryer, then slowly baked to ultimate strength. Once the clay is fully transformed to ceramic, they’re colour glazed to perfection.
23 cm wide x 29 cm high x 5 cm deep

This vase is for inside use only. Please avoid humidity, rain or any other source of water from the outside.
The inside of the vase is hand-glazed and thus made waterproof.
Do not clean or wash the object with any source of soap or chemical cleaning product. Clean only with a damp cloth.
If the vase is damaged, scratched, broken – under all circumstances – do not fill it with water, until a certified person has approved that it is still waterproof.
