This object is hand-sculpted by Lisette Leegwater. It’s derived from a single block of staetite — a soft, snow-white mineral from Brasil that contains high levels of chalk. Lisette shapes these raw pieces of stone through a meditative process of chopping, grating and polishing — led and inspired by the material itself. By abstracting the natural shape of the stone, she slowly works towards the final result.

The series of five that Lisette created for MEK is one-of-a-kind. As Lisette worked on all objects at the same time, a morphic family arose that is uniquely symbiotic and inspired by their unique material. Never before have her sculptures been so soft and round.

Lisette Leegwater is a Dutch artist, celebrated for her mesmerising abstract sculptures. Working from her Amsterdam atelier, she describes her approach as a deeply meditative process. Inspired by the natural shape, texture and layers of the raw minerals she selects, unique shapes arise under her guiding hands.

100% Brazilian staetite (also known as soapstone).
19 wide x 20 cm high

The unique steatite material might turn matte over time. To regain it’s shine, gently polish with a soft flannel cloth and bees wax. Be careful when handling the sculpture while wearing jewellery.
